A creative consultant meets with a client over coffee.

You’ve started looking for someone to help with the creative aspect of your business—the branding, web design and content, the marketing—but no one seems to be the right fit. Or, even worse, you’re on the fence and unsure how to ask creative consultants questions that will get you the answers you need to make an informed decision. We’ve broken down what you should be looking for in a creative consultant into more manageable steps.

Your Project’s Scope Should Align with Your Creative Consultant’s Abilities

Know what you want to accomplish before you look for a consultant. When you know what your project’s scope looks like, it makes it much easier to determine if a consultant is a good fit for you and your company. Being certain in your vision (with reasonable flexibility, of course) makes it easier to communicate with your consultant and avoids many miscommunication errors, which can consume time and money.

3 Things to Look For in a Creative Consultant

You’re looking for three things in a consultant: Personality, Work, and Experience.

Personality: You want to have a good rapport with your creative

consultant. Does their character mesh well with you and your team? Can you see yourself communicating with this person over the course of the next few weeks or months? You want to pick someone you will be able to work well with, who is open to ideas and suggestions. Ideally, this would be a person you’d want to work with on another project again, so you don’t have to go through the trouble of finding someone else.

Work: What does the body of the creative consultant’s work look like? How do their designs compare to what you’re looking for? There’s never going to be a 1:1 match with what you’re looking for in their portfolio—nor should there be. You want your design and content to stand out from the crowd. However, you should ask yourself if their work reflects the style that you’d like to see on your website. If yes, then they might be the right consultant for you!

Experience: What have they done in the past? More years doesn’t always mean that the person will be better equipped to handle your project (but let’s be honest; sometimes it does). Having a few years of experience under their belt also means that your consultant will be able to smoothly adapt to industry trends and patterns.

You will need to find the balance that’s right for you and your company. Maybe someone doesn’t have a lot of experience, but their work is outstanding. Maybe their work isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, but you get along with them really well and with their experience, you know they can make your project happen.
